WESTWATER CANYON - UTAH

If you're short on time, but hungry for adventure, Westwater is your place.

Generally run as a 2-day expedition, GOALS offers an extended experience in the canyon often referred to as "Westy" by launching further upstream than most and exploring the calm, tranquil waters of Ruby and Horsethief Canyons before entering the rapids and excitement of Westwater.  You'll get accustomed to "river life" on the first day of your trip, enjoying time in rafts, inflatable kayaks, and even SUPs (stand-up paddle boards) - then you'll discover why National Geographic named Westwater Canyon the "World's Best Short Whitewater Trip" on days 2 and 3.

Aside from the excitement of rapids like Funnel Falls, Skull, Big Hummer, and Sock-It-To-Me, explorers in Westwater Canyon are given the opportunity to float past some unique history and geology that can only be viewed from the river.  You'll take a short hike to the "outlaw cave" - a hideout used by famous outlaws of the west that still contains clothing, beds, tools, and other relics left behind by outlaws who used the cave to evade capture by lawmen.  In addition, you'll get to see some the oldest exposed rock on our planet, as the dark Vishnu Schist that forms much of the canyon walls is over 1.6 billion years old.

You'll be in and out of Westwater before you know it - but the amount of excitement and exploration you've packed into 3 short days will have you planning a return expedition before you even get to the take-out ramp!

WESTWATER CANYON Itinerary INCLUDES:

  • Camping at Highline State Park the night before our launch.
  • We'll meet our guides at the Cisco Boat Ramp in Cisco, UT - then shuttle back to our put in in Loma, CO.
  • Day 1 will feature the warm, calm waters of Ruby and Horsethief Canyons - with ample opportunity for hiking to petroglyphs and unique desert rock formations, spotting bald eagles, and becoming acquainted with the river.
  • On Day 2, we'll float past the Westwater Ranger Station, and the canyon will begin to get deeper and steeper as we approach the whitewater which makes Westwater Canyon so popular.
  • Our night 2 campsite will be just above the start of the rapids, leading to an increased sense of excitement and anticipation for what is to come downstream!
  • On day 3, enjoy a healthy serving of Class II - IV rapids, then share stories of your heroic lines through the canyon on the flat water float out towards our take-out ramp at Cisco.
  • Your vehicles are waiting for you at Cisco, and you're off on a safe return home...daydreaming about the splashy excitement of Westwater Canyon!
