RUBY and horsethief canyons - COLORADO/utah

DSC_6136b.jpg

Ruby/Horsethief is the perfect opportunity for groups who are looking to experience a comfortable introduction to desert multi-day river expeditions.

In Ruby Canyon, the mighty Colorado River moves away from I-70 after flowing beside it since before Glenwood Springs, and enters a true wilderness area characterized by beautiful red sandstone walls and rock spires which house an array of desert animals and birds including bighorn sheep, black bear, bald eagles, and vultures.  The water is warm as it flows through Ruby Canyon in the latter part of summer, and the gentle flows encourage Ruby explorers to spend as much time in the water as they do on it.

When you come to shore, you'll have ample opportunities for hikes that lead to ancient petroglyphs and interesting side canyons that offer incredible hands-on opportunities to study the unique desert ecosystem.  Camping in the "Black Rocks" section provides the ultimate desert playground - an area full of unique, black schist that has been sculpted by over a billion years of wind and water, hollowing out great spots to climb on, over, under, and through - or just sit back with your favorite book or river journal to record the day's highlights.

Ruby is the place for groups more interested in tranquility than whitewater thrills, and for whom a welcoming introduction to the desert river life is calling.

RUBY / HORSETHIEF Itinerary INCLUDES:

  • We'll meet at the Westwater boat ramp near Westwater, UT - a great place to camp out the night before your trip launch.
  • Following a brief orientation with our friendly and professional river guides in the morning, we'll shuttle back to Loma, Colorado to begin our adventure.
  • Healthy lunches will be prepared on the side of the river by your guides, while dinners and breakfasts will be a combined effort in camp each day between the guides and your "cook crew" - changing each day.
  • Long afternoons in camp will offer plenty of time for play or exploring the unique landscape - and will end in great dinners followed by a fun campfire under the largest star display you can imagine.
  • Long stretches of flatwater will give kids the opportunity to swim, paddle their own boats, and gain confidence before getting back to business for the fun, splashy Class II rapids in Black Rock that our young explorers are proud to navigate!
  • After 3 days of fun, we'll end our expedition at the Westwater Boat Ramp - where your vehicles await from the start of our journey.  Off you'll go towards home, recounting your adventures and planning your return trip to the Ruby and Horsethief Canyons.
