OUR HISTORY

Being written one child at a time.

GOALS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Evergreen, Colorado.  The original inspiration and energy to create GOALS came in 2010 from a group of professional educators and river guides who combined their passions, knowledge, and networks to create once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for kids outdoors.  Our unique expeditions have been carefully crafted to be simultaneously safe yet stimulating, comfortable yet challenging, and humbling yet empowering.

What began as a great idea in one small school west of Denver now serves kids from throughout the United States on many of the most revered sections of river in Colorado, Utah, Oregon and Idaho.  In 7 years of programming, GOALS has provided almost 3,400 days on wild rivers for more than 750 kids.

CREATING IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS

OBJECTIVES

Many kids experience their first GOALS expedition in 4th or 5th grade, then return throughout middle and high school - even college.  Therefore, the GOALS curriculum and the structure of our programs build connections that are most appropriate and powerful for specific age groups.

Although some recurring themes resonate though every GOALS expedition, we adjust activities and itineraries to connect our youngest explorers to their peers, our middle schoolers to the planet, and our high school/young adult participants to themselves.

ELEMENTARY EXPEDITIONS.
3-4 days - creating connections to peers through:

  • Working in TEAMS to learn new outdoor skill sets and overcome challenges.
  • Unplugged PLAY that promotes problem solving, creativity, and leadership.
  • CAMARADERIE developed through shared time presenting the authentic self.

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPEDITIONS.
4-6 days - creating connections to the planet through:

  • Hands-on EDUCATIONAL LESSONS examining the history, science, and current issues affecting the canyon.
  • Creating awareness of the impact we can all make through CONSERVATION to protect and preserve the wild places that remain.

HIGH SCHOOL / COLLEGE EXPEDITIONS.
5-12 days - creating connections to the self through:

  • Creating AWARENESS of personal strengths - and using them to overcome challenges.
  • SETTING GOALS and creating a plan to achieve them.
  • Building SELF-CONFIDENCE by recognizing vulnerability and achieving success in novel activities with a high level of perceived risk.

ADULT / SPECIALTY EXPEDITIONS.
GOALS offers a limited number of specialty expeditions for adult groups.  Objectives for these programs are tailored to meet the desired outcomes of the groups we partner with.  Please contact GOALS to learn more.

WHO DOES GOALS SERVE?

Put simply, we serve kids.

WHO DOES GOALS SERVE?

Put simply, we serve kids.

Come ONE, COME ALL!

GOALS programs are available to every child between the ages of 4th grade and college.  We believe that these experiences should not be limited to kids who fall into any one socioeconomic class, gender, religion, zip code, etc.  All kids need GOALS, and the planet needs more GOALS graduates.

Since many kids go on their first GOALS expedition in elementary school and return over the years all the way through college, our curriculum builds specific connections that are most appropriate and have the greatest impact for specific age ranges.  While the connections we create differ with participant ages, a common 4-step growth process resonates through every GOALS expedition that involves searching, navigating, reflecting and believing.  We can't tell you just how it all works - you'll need to join us in the canyon yo witness that first-hand.  But, we can share some of the results.

OUR FAMILY

When parents ask if we run background checks on the people who lead our programs, we have to chuckle a bit.  Sure, we run background checks...but, the lack of a criminal record doesn't imply that you're ready to lead a GOALS river trip.

Our programs can only be as excellent as the people who make them happen.  These are the 1%.  They are the people you want your kids to look up to.  They are inspirational, dedicated, and wise.  They are part of a group you wish you had taken the time to join 20 years ago, or that hope you can jump in to 20 years from now.  They are professional, knowledgeable, and caring.  Their calloused hands, strong shoulders, and collections of campfire stories have been built by years of experience.  In many cases, they're mentoring kids through GOALS because someone did the same for them as an adolescent - and it changed their life.  They are following their inner compass, and loving every minute of it.  Their spirit is palpable - and contagious.

These are the people our kids learn from, work alongside, and emulate.  We are blessed to call them our family.

Think you've got what it takes to empower people on wild rivers?
When the demand for GOALS programs is more than our current family can adequately support, we bring new passionate and talented people into the crew.   Please contact us if you're certain that your passion for using the outdoors to make a positive impact on the lives of kids will do nothing short of knock our socks off.
